Practical Christianity: When You’re Seeing Red

Dear Family,

Being a Christian does NOT dissolve all of your problems; It does not stop you from having enemies. Fortunately, our relationship with God gives us a method to work through our problems with our sanity in tact. It gives us assurance that we will be victorious over everyone or everything that comes against us.

Sure, some people and some circumstances will make you angry. They will make your blood boil. Are you capable of cursing them out? Are you capable of ‘reading their life’? Are you capable of retaliating in a way that will make them regret it? Sure….but should you? absolutely NOT.

So what do you do, when you’ve been wronged? Talked about? Stolen from? Lied on? Cheated on? Broken? You pray, you choose your battles wisely, and you choose to rise above the circumstances. Don’t allow your anger drive you into sin. Don’t you “lose your salvation” for someone who you are already victorious over. It may feel good in the moment, but trust me, it is NOT worth it.

When someone has hurt you, talked about you, broken your heart, or has treated you unfairly:

Pray this Prayer:

God, I am Angry/Hurt/Broken. This is not what I deserve. Without your guidance, I will lash out, I will fight, I will cuss, I will be way too petty. I know those actions would make me feel better in this moment. It would make me feel bigger and better. But I don’t want to take any action or say any words in this moment that would harm my relationship with you. So, Lord, I need you right now in this moment to fill my heart with your spirit. Help me to operate in love, in mercy, in grace, in forgiveness. Let my response to others/this situation be representative of the way that you respond to me when I’m disobedience. Help me to find the silver lining, the good in this situation, for I know that all things have their purpose. Fill my heart with your love, and guard my mouth, that I will say only what is necessary in this moment. In Jesus name, AMEN.

Now, Declare:

I am God’s child and I choose to represent his love always.

I will not be a slave to anger, fear, pain, profanity, or pettiness.

I will be an ambassador for Christ, even in this moment.

There is no weapon formed against me, that will prosper.

No enemy can steal the joy that God has given me. Not today, or any day.

For I am more than a conqueror through him that loves me.

I am an overcomer by the blood of the lamb and the word of my testimony.

I am strengthened with all might according to His glorious power.

I know, that all things work together for the good of those that love him and are called according to his purpose.

I will get through this. For God has not given me the spirit of fear (or hurt, or anger), but of power, of love and of a sound mind.

This too shall pass.
